Southern Cross Safaris offers its travelers a wholly specialized range of Safari holidays throughout the East African region of Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar. Safaris ranging from set departure tours, tailor-made holidays, honeymoons, private home stays, incentive tours and conferencing, designed for people who would rather travel on their own, or with a private group of family or friends.

In East Africa, the safari concept is based around four types of safari - the permanent luxury tented camp, the mobile luxury tented camp, safari lodges and private home stays. Each offers it's own magical experience. The permanent sites, on which camps and lodges are located, invariably have been established at places where the wildlife comes to you - typically close to a waterhole or spring. With a luxury mobile-tented safari, you follow the animals, together with a fully staffed entourage that moves with you. This is camping - but with a difference! Often a luxury affair, offering the highest standards of comfort and cuisine that is possible in the bush.

With Southern Cross Safaris, independent travel is easy to arrange and exciting to experience. Planning your safari is simple. Any safari or idea that appears in this website can be taken on an independent basis or as a group. Perhaps the Masai Mara with it's prolific, year-round game viewing, or simply relaxing on a tropically white beach on Kenya's coastline, with miles and miles of white sands and a warm sea playground protected by a pristine coral reef just offshore. Wherever possible we will create a personal itinerary for you that accommodates your preferred departure dates and includes activities and events that are of particular interest to you. We can organize holidays anywhere within the East African region, and not just the destinations that you may see featured here. There is almost too much choice, and all you have to do is simply ask!

Our 2019 Tariff offers a selection of pre-determined safari itineraries, designed to suit a wide range of budgets. Whether it is a two-night stay in the Masai Mara or a 7-day safari through Tanzania, there is much to choose from.

Bush and beach is one of the most popular combinations, which typically includes a magical week on safari followed by a few relaxing days at a luxury beach resort.

Adventure and Culture are what the African continent is all about. Within your chosen safari programme, you can include a variety of activities, including hot air ballooning, heli-camping, walking with camels, trekking, canoeing and horse riding. If your passion lies in culture, we can arrange visits and excursions or even base your whole trip around a specific area of interest.

Regular Tours

Our regular departure tours do appeal to a wide range of nationalities and budgets. These safaris offer an ideal opportunity to experience the highlights of Kenya and Tanzania without incurring the expense of an exclusive private safari. Southern Cross Safaris has designed a selection of tours by road and air, featuring all of the major

game parks and reserves throughout the region. These tours range from a one-night stay at a "tree lodge" to a comprehensive fifteen-day safari incorporating the very best of both Kenya and Tanzania. With a wide selection of tours operating throughout the week, it is easy to plan a safari according to preference and time available. Southern Cross Safaris operates "seat-in-bus" safari tours using safari microbuses with guaranteed window seats for all participants. Certain safari itineraries can involve transportation in vehicles operated by camps/lodges. The seat configurations in these can and will vary. Full details of our tours, including itineraries and prices are included in this Southern Cross Safaris Tariff.

Air Services

Regular departures by air are by far the more popular type of safari on offer. East Africa has a comprehensive and reliable network of internally scheduled flight services operating between all major towns, cities and National Parks and Reserves. These services are offered on a per seat basis and operated in either single, twin or quadruple engine aircraft. These range from the larger DH Dash 7 & DH6 Twin Otter, to the smaller single turbine engine C208 Cessna Grand Caravan. For the ultimate of convenience, a wide range of aircraft are available for private charter. Your own personal aircraft offers accessibility to those airstrips not serviced by scheduled flights, with total flexibility as to timing and

routing and the ultimate in relaxed travel. Many of the smaller camps, lodges and boutique hotels that we offer to our tailor-made clients are so 'off the beaten track' that it is only practically possible to fly in. For itineraries such as these, we only use the very best pilots and the very best aircraft.

Driver Guides

The success of any safari tour in Africa largely depends upon the calibre of your Safari driver/guide. In this respect the greatest care is taken in selecting responsible, qualified people who are capable of providing a cheerful, caring and attentive service to our clients. To this end, all our Safari driver guides at Southern Cross Safaris are qualified to KPSGA(Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association) Bronze level. This is a minimum requirement before we will consider hiring in this field. All of our guides have undertaken rigorous training and refresher courses and are experts in their chosen fields. Some of our guides are bi-lingual, and all have an in- depth knowledge of routes, conditions, local attractions and practical mechanics. In addition, their ability as game spotters is outstanding and they are highly proficient in the identification of the animals and birds of Kenya and Tanzania.

Safari Guides

Certainly an invaluable asset to any tour, private safari guides invariably turn a visit to East Africa into a visit of a lifetime! Their life spent in Africa has equipped them with immense knowledge of local conditions, customs and people. They are naturalists who really know and love the country and the wildlife. Above all, they are ardent conservationists, each with a particular discipline such as zoology, ornithology, entomology or anthropology. Their benefit to the client in terms of enjoyment and an intensified personal experience of their African journey far outweighs the additional monetary cost.
